Waxing a bicycle chain is very good for keeping the drivetrain clean and making components last much longer, though it requires more upfront work than traditional oil.

The Pros of Waxing

Cleanliness: Wax dries completely solid, meaning dirt, dust, and grit do not stick to it. Oil creates a sticky "grinding paste" with road grime, but wax keeps your hands and clothes grease-free.

Less Wear: Because dirt cannot cling to the chain, metal components like cassettes and chainrings suffer far less abrasive wear. A waxed drivetrain can often last two to three times longer than an oiled one.

Efficiency: Wax reduces friction effectively, offering marginal power savings (a couple of watts) that stay consistent because the chain stays clean.

The Cons of Waxing

Initial Prep: A brand-new chain must be completely stripped of its factory grease using powerful solvents before it can take the hot wax properly.

Time and Effort: Immersive hot waxing requires melting wax in a slow cooker or dedicated pot, removing the chain, and reinstalling it.

Water Sensitivity: Standard wax does not perform well in heavy rain or wet conditions, where it can wash off or cause surface rust if the chain isn't dried and treated properly.

To tighten SRAM controls (shifter/brake levers) on a Deda Alanera carbon handlebar, you should target a range of 6 Nm to 8 Nm. However, because you are pairing them with a carbon bar, the safest and most effective method is to utilize the lowest necessary force within that range alongside carbon assembly paste.

Follow the Deda Specification: Deda specifies that their carbon handlebars are designed to operate safely with a lever tightening torque of 6 Nm (minimum) to 8 Nm (maximum).

Check SRAM Limits: SRAM road lever clamps generally state a maximum limit of 6 Nm printed directly on the clamp band. Always adhere to the lower maximum limit between the two components to prevent crushing the carbon fibers.

Apply Carbon Friction Paste: Never install the levers dry. Spread a thin layer of carbon assembly paste on the handlebar drop area where the clamp sits. This increases friction friction dramatically, allowing the controls to stay perfectly secure at a lower torque value (like 5.5 to 6 Nm) without slipping.

Bicycles from Italy, Taiwan or China, what is the difference, how to choose?

When choosing between bicycles from China, Taiwan, and Italy, "better" depends entirely on your priorities: prestige, engineering, or value. While the lines have blurred—pretty much all "Italian" carbon bicycles - especially the big famous brands - are all produced in Asia.

1. Taiwan: The Carbon Engineering Powerhouse

Taiwan is widely considered the world leader in carbon fiber manufacturing. If you want the best performance-to-reliability ratio, Taiwan is usually the answer. They moved from cheap labor to high-end engineering decades ago. Brands like Giant and Merida own their own factories and manufacture frames (OEM) for almost every major Western brand from the US, Germany and Italy. Many branches provide that OEM Service for smaller businesses around the world. They supply tier 1 frames, under the paint is exactly what you find under the famous brand frames.

2. Italy: Passion for the Heritage

Italy (next to some other European countries) is the biggest heritage in road cycling. In the golden years (til about 1990) there where many frame builders. Now there are only a few left. Some manufacturers produce a very small number of carbon frames, for customers going for a very individual custom geometry. When it comes to steel frames they are still producing that classic piece of art. This is not about a "2 watts advantage". Those steel frames are pure passion, the delight of having a beautiful bicycle.

3. China: Some producers offer very good quality and a reasonable price.

China meanwhile does not only make "knock-offs". Some manufacturers produce good quality carbon frames. They offer great value for the price. But warranty and customer support can be difficult. It’s the little not perfect things, when shipping back is not worth it, but keeping is not satisfying. And there is also a huge quality gap between OEM manufacturers and extreme cheap suppliers on AliExpress. Some try to establish an own international brand, but then the prices are not that big of an advantage anymore.

Italien (neben einigen anderen europäischen Ländern) besitzt die größte Tradition im Radsport. In den goldenen Jahren (bis etwa 1990) gab es viele Rahmenbauer, man konnte fast in jedem Ort einen finden. Die sind alle verschwunden. Heute sind es nur noch wenige. Einige Hersteller fertigen eine sehr geringe Anzahl an Carbonrahmen für Kunden mit sehr individuellen Geometriewünschen. Bei Stahlrahmen hingegen entstehen in Italien nach wie vor klassische Kunstwerke. Hier geht es nicht um einen Leistungsvorteil. Diese Stahlrahmen sind pure Leidenschaft, die Freude an einem schönen Fahrrad.

3. China: Einige Produzenten bieten sehr gute Qualität und angemessenen Preis.

China stellt mittlerweile nicht nur billige Kopien her. Einige Hersteller produzieren hochwertige Carbonrahmen. Sie bieten ein gutes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis. Garantie und Kundenservice können jedoch problematisch sein. Es sind die kleinen Mängel, bei denen sich die Rücksendung nicht lohnt, das Behalten aber unbefriedigend ist. Zudem besteht ein enormer Qualitätsunterschied zwischen etablierten OEM-Herstellern und extrem günstigen Anbietern auf AliExpress. Manche versuchen, eine eigene internationale Marke zu etablieren, doch dann ist der Preisvorteil nicht mehr so groß.

The DRIVEWAY.

You may ride your bicycle or come visit by car. Some people have horses and go for a ride passing my house on Sunday morning. When walking you see the most. Is relaxing and nice chatting to the people working along the road.

On the way to my house you may ask for directions and you may find people who do not know my name, but they will ask: "Sì, il ciclista? Sì, sempre fin lassù" ("The cyclist? Yes, just all the way up there").

When I moved here for good, many of my neighbors were delighted to have an ex cyclist here. Some like to talk about cycling, some even do ride a road bicycle, others did when they were younger or they praise cycling, the Giro d'Italia and its gladiators from past and present. A few soon have offered me that I can store my bicycle down in town at their garage. “When you go for a ride or coming home you could overcome the descent or the ascent with much less effort with your car, but you can do all the nice bike riding along the coastal road or in the hinterland with your road bicycle. But you don’t have to make life hard on that DRIVEWAY." Yes, you don’t have to.

the descent

When descending the first thing comes to your mind is: “Who rides my road bicycle back up there when coming home”. The surface is not really bad, some rifts along the ride direction, steering without seeing what comes after the corner, kind of steep, even in the turns. I do not take chances. No it is not dangerous. But as a cyclist you have to pay attention, like on all roads. For different reasons. Here it is the rural environment. The driveway asks for a perfectly maintained and adjusted bicycle. A test if all is good for the next roads to come. Make sure you don’t lose your bottle on the bumpy road, you will need it further on the way. Descending many times you are alone, but an apecar or a dog may cross. Sometimes a brave truck driver comes up here and delivers what we need for building our houses, maintaining our private road and all the fences.

the ascent

The numbers are not really impressive. Basically it is only a 250 meters climb. Well vertically 250 meters. You have 4 kilometers of road to gain that altitude. But it is not all asphalt. Most of the road surface is concrete. That makes it unlovable, maybe even unpleasant. Hard to push the pedals. On the first steeper slope you will get out of the saddle. Sometimes there is some moisture on the road. When getting out of the saddle you will learn if the marketing noise about the tire grip is all ok or bullshit. Second will be more present. Some climbers skill is needed to get over that little obstacle. You will learn a bit about bicycle quality and about rider quality on the slope. However once on top after all it is lovable, that feeling of conquering. They say it can be addictive. I don’t know.

This road is not the only way to our house. We have 3 more roads arriving here. But they are a bit more demanding. Well. One day I may switch to a horse. When I am too old to ride my bicycle back home.
